The Permian Basin Amateur Radio Club came into being conceptually, early in 2001. Several of the hams in Midland and surrounding areas, felt that there were several areas of interest in the Amateur Radio hobby that weren't being addressed by the current clubs. After several months of debate and many e-mails back and fourth it was decided to set up a new club to allow everyone who had a desire to participate in all aspects of amateur radio to do so within the new club. The PBARC also plans to have activities that would appeal to the non-ham family members Things like bowling, putt putt golf, dances, luncheons and dinners.
To make matters more complicated, upon examining the number of amateurs around the Permian Basin, it was found that a relatively small number of hams actually belonged to a chartered club of any kind. Food for thought. It was finally decided to include All of West Texas and Southeast New Mexico with in the new club boundaries.
All the planning was more or less complete by the first of October. The only question was where and how to announce the new club. Some other unresolved issues. Do we charge dues. should we be ARRL certified etc. would have to wait for the first meeting,
As plans were being made for the unveiling of their new club. One of our charter members took the initiave and on the spur of the moment established the Permian Basin Amateur Radio Club Net. The first net was held on Wednesday night at 9:00 PM and later moved to an earlier time to allow the ARES net to continue in the 9:00 PM time slot. One month later the net was moved to it's current time of 9:00 PM on Thursday nights on the PBR Link.
In June 2002 the PBARC was chartered as an affiliated club of the ARRL. Officers were decided and dues established.
