Buddy's
scheduled for reopening on Aug. 31
By JEFF
BLACKMON News Editor
Mark your
calendars. Wednesday, Aug. 31 is a big day for Andrews. That’s
the day Kelsey Robertson and Mary Anderson kick start the fryers for
those wanting to enjoy Buddy’s Drive-In’s famous steak
fingers. “Everybody’s excited about us re-opening,” Anderson
said. “We’ve even had volunteers come in and help us clean
up.” Robertson, Anderson, volunteers and other family members
have spent the last week cleaning and getting ready for the
reopening. The crew is repainting the restaurant and giving it a
good scrub down. “It will pay off,” Anderson said. But can
patrons expect the same type of service and food that made Buddy’s a
West Texas legend before it closed March 22? “It’s going to be
the same,” Robertson assured. “There’s going to be the same pictures
of Mini (Coleman) and Floy (Robertson) greeting you when you walk
in. “It’s going to be the same ol’ Buddy’s … just like before
with a smile.” Floy Robertson and Mini Coleman originally opened
the diner in 1969. Robertson, an Andrews native, is the grandson
of the Floy Robertson, who passed away in 2001. In a way, Robertson
reopening the landmark is in honor of his grandmother. “A lot of
us kids grew up around this place,” Robertson said. “I want to see
it reopen for my grandmother and Mini’s sake.” Anderson has been
involved with Buddy’s for just as long. Her father, Eusevio Mireles,
helped build the additional kitchen and eating space on to the
original building. Anderson worked more than 35 years at
Buddy’s. She added she is glad to be able to help open the
restaurant to accommodate all the travelers who make Buddy’s a must
while on vacation along with sports teams and fans. She said word
is already out about the diner opening back up, especially since the
television show “Texas Country Reporter” began showing reruns of a
segment it did on Buddy’s years ago once it heard the news. Word
on Buddy’s has also spread on the Internet, with news on the diner
being spread through message boards. An official grand opening
ceremony will be scheduled for later on in the year, according to
Robertson and Anderson.
