Caving in the 80's
I was once a member of the 10 G Grotto in Odessa, Texas and this is the patch they had below. 10 G Grotto was not affiliated with the NSS.

These are some pictures taken by a relative of a friend of mine and he graciously let me scan them, they represent early days at Carlsbad Caverns Parking Lot circa@ May 1930.

  • I am a member and a "Fellow of the NSS" ...or the National Speleological Society (NSS) which is a non-profit organization affiliated with the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The NSS was founded for the purpose of advancing the study, conservation, exploration, and knowledge of caves. More than 10,000 members in 200 grottos conduct regular meetings to bring cavers together within their general area and coordinate activities which may include mapping, cleaning, and gating sensitive caves.
I got this pin after having been a member of the NSS for 25 years
  • The NSS Cave Diving Section is the largest cave diving organization in the United States with members in almost every state. While section members are very active in diving springs in Florida, they also dive mines and swamps in the northern states, conduct high altitude sump diving in the West, perform motorized and stage diving in the South, dive sea caves in the Northeast, survey Bahama Blue Holes, and conduct studies of various caves and springs in Mexico. The section is also active in the development of underwater rescue equipment, and sponsors a comprehensive cave diver and instructor training program. It also holds national technology transfer seminars twice a year and publishes Underwater Speleology.

  • The National Cave Rescue Commission is a volunteer group developed to coordinate cave rescue resources throughout the United States. The NCRC itself is a communications network through which to locate the actual rescue workers and equipment. Most NCRC cavers do perform rescues, but not as part of the NCRC; rather as members of their local rescue squads, civil defense units, or cave rescue groups. The NCRC is a component of the Department of the Executive Vice-President of the National Speleological Society (NSS).

This picture was taken in Amazing Maze Cave June 1984 and it features Tammy Erratt. It was also the cover of the November 1994 PBSS news letter " THE HOLE NEWS" which I edited for a year and a half.

This is the international caving symbol.
